CFEG reports that on April 26, 2017, in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, an IRS employee was arrested for the theft of Government money. This IRS employee was indicted for the offense on April 11, 2017. https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/oi_highlights_2017.shtml

According to court documents, this IRS employee worked as a contact representative for the IRS in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from about October 2008 to 2017. In October 2014 he was promoted from a seasonal employee to a permanent employee. https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/oi_highlights_2017.shtml

From approximately January 31, 2010 to January 11, 2014, while employed in a seasonal status, this IRS employee stole and knowingly converted to his own use money and property of the United States. Specifically, during this period he accessed by telephone on a weekly basis the Interactive Claims Response System at the Pennsylvania Department of Labor to determine his eligibility for unemployment compensation benefits. He answered a series of questions during the accesses in which he falsely stated that he was not working and that work was not available, when, in fact, he was working at the IRS and receiving pay for his work at the IRS. He fraudulently obtained a total of approximately $38,967 in unemployment compensation benefits to which he was not entitled. https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/oi_highlights_2017.shtml

This IRS employee faced a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment and additional legal actions were anticipated. https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/oi_highlights_2017.shtml
