“Identity Theft” August 26, 2015
Senator Ayotte, thank you for hosting this hearing and the opportunity to provide testimony on the important subject of identity theft and its impact on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and taxpayers. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, also known as “TIGTA,” is statutorily mandated to provide independent audit and investigative services necessary to improve the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of the Federal system of tax administration. TIGTA’s oversight activities are designed to identify high-risk systemic inefficiencies in IRS operations and to investigate exploited weaknesses in tax administration.
